Leading UK safety charity, the CO Research Trust will be hosting a roundtable to consider the new ICD-11 coding system, to explore how best it can be used and what steps are needed in order to maximise the data collected.

The roundtable will take place on Wednesday 30th March 2022 at 4pm (GMT) and will focus on the mortality and morbidity of carbon monoxide poisoning. It will bring together experts with an interest in this area, including the Centre for Disease Control, and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The event will start with short presentations from several experts in this area, including Becky Close from UKHSA and Dr Matt Hinds-Aldrich, followed by panel discussions, then questions from attendees.

The event follows on from a report published by Cranfield University in February 2022, which included a discussion of ICD coding practices and how they might be used for more accurate recording of CO-related deaths.

The roundtable will be chaired by Isabella Myers, the author of the report. Isabella Myers said. “ICD-11 provides us with an opportunity to reevaluate how the coding system can be best used, and what steps may be needed to ensure that efficacy. It’s vital that we maximise the value of the data collected, to build a more accurate picture of death and morbidity related to CO exposure. This in turn will allow us to take steps towards building a better prevention strategy.”
