The CO Research Trust (CORT) is joining the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) this Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week to improve understanding of carbon monoxide, the ‘silent killer’.

CORT will be sharing vital information about the key signs and symptoms to be aware of that could indicate carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and the best ways to protect yourself from the risk of CO poisoning.

With dropping temperatures, the increased use of household appliances and heating systems increases the risk of CO exposure, particularly in enclosed spaces.

Couple this with the current cost of living crisis and more households than ever are at risk of CO poisoning, as people seek ways to save on heating and cooking costs.

Shockingly, 1 in 5 UK homes are thought to have an unsafe gas appliance, risking sickness, and death from CO.

CORT, funds research projects which highlights the devastating impact that CO exposure has for survivors and the families of victims.

Working to reduce exposure and better understand the effects of CO is at the heart of our research.

Adrian McConnell, Chief Executive says

“The research we carry out seeks to improve the understanding of CO and its effects on health.

Tragically far too many people are exposed to CO and there is still a long way to go to improve safety and make people aware of the dangers and risks of carbon monoxide. This is what make campaigns like CO Awareness Week, so vitally important.”

During the week, we will be working with the APPCOG to share victims’ stories, as well as tips on the sources, symptoms, and ways to prevent CO from taking any more lives.

APPCOG Officer Ian Byrne MP stresses “more awareness about simple steps to tackle CO exposure can save countless lives this winter – let’s work together to keep ourselves and our loved ones protected”.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs from the 20th to 26th November 2023.
